MBBS, DTCD, Ph.D (Japan) Consultant – Respiratory Medicine
Dr. Asif Mujtaba Mahmud achieved his MBBS degree from Chittagong Medical College in 1983 and Diploma in Tuberculous and Chest Diseases (DTCD) from Institute of Diseases of Chest & Hospital (IDCH), Dhaka in 1986.
Obtained Doctorate (Ph.D) degree in Medical Science with specialization in Respiratory Medicine from Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan in 1997 and awarded ‘’Young Investigator’s Award’’ by the University in 1996.
Served as Junior Consultant, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor from 1998 to 2010 at National Institute of Diseases of the Chest & Hospital (NIDCH).
Worked as Consultant – Respiratory Medicine at Ibn Sina Diagnostic Center, United Hospital and Square Hospitals Ltd. Acknowledged as a leading pulmonologist of the country.
Recognized as the pioneer for initiating the clinical and programmatic management of Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Bangladesh since 2000.
He has total 84 publications including 13 in International journals.
As Member, Board of Editors and Contributor, he has been involved in the formulation of National guidelines on asthma and COPD, Handbook on Tuberculosis for MBBS students, National Guidelines and Operational Manual for Tuberculosis Control as well as National Guidelines and Operational Manual for Programmatic Management of Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB).
Serves as the Treasurer and Chair of Scientific Committee of Bangladesh Lung Foundation and Bangladesh Counselor of Asia Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR).
He also served as the Secretary General, Bangladesh Society of Allergy & Immunology (BANSAI) from 2002 to 2012.
Dr. Mahmud is actively contributing to patient centered TB control, particularly drug resistant TB as well as Tobacco control as a member of national and international forums.
Now Dr. Mahmud is working at Asgar Ali Hospital as Consultant – Respiratory Medicine.
